Trial to Assess Chelation Therapy (TACT)

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) sponsored the nine year Trial to Assess Chelation Therapy (TACT) and the results showed an overall 18% risk factor reduction regardingĀ a cardiovascular event in those who received chelation. In the group of patients who had a large anterior wall myocardial infarction prior to the study, there was a 40% reduction in having a future cardiovascular event. TACT also found minimal adverse events.

If Chelation works, why isn’t everyone doing it?

The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published the results of the TACT study. Critics of chelation rejected the positive results.

Even with the overwhelming positive results from TACT:
An anesthesiologist at Tufts University and editor of Science Review of Alternative Medicine, Atwood, a professor of medicine and editor-in-chief of Science Review of Alternative Medicine MD Wallace Sampson, a litigator for medical boards, Elizabeth Woechner, and expert witness for medical board disciplinary litigation, Robert Baratz, MD, DDS,PhD wrote an 89 page editorial,”Why the NIH Trial to Assess Chelation Therapy (TACT) Should be Abandoned”. (Medscape|Med.2008; 10[5]:115)
*Science Review of Alternative Medicine is a journal of articles claiming the failure and danger of alternative medicine.

Even with the overwhelming positive results of TACT, Wikipedia still says:
“Chelation therapy must be administered with care as it has a number of possible side effects, including death. In response to increasing use of chelation therapy as alternative medicine and in circumstances in which the therapy should not be used in conventional medicine, various health organizations have confirmed that medical evidence does not support the effectiveness of chelation therapy for any purpose other than the treatment of heavy metal poisoning.”
