Amalgam fillings | Are mercury fillings toxic?

Does our saliva protect us from toxic amalgam fillings and mercury gases?

That’s what the spokesperson from the ADA, Edmond Hewlett, D.D.S. says!! So the water and protein composing our saliva creates a barrier so the mercury vapor is not released from amalgam fillings???  Does this even make sense to you?
